Organizing My Laundry Room

Friday, 4. February 2011

I have been organizing my laundry room/office this week.  This room has been a catch-all since we moved in almost four years ago.  The closet pictured here has been my worst problem area in the entire house.  I had all kinds of stuff stashed here; pictures, knick-knacks, books, wallpaper samples, frames, pillows, pretty much everything that hasn’t found a permanent place elsewhere.  So, I decided enough was a enough.  I gutted the closet.  I spent hours sorting everything, then I got out the trash bags.  About half was ready for the garbage can and the other half went to Goodwill.  When everything was all sorted, I painted.  The boys outnumber the girls in our family so I decided to claim this one spot as my girly heaven.   I decided that since I was using half of this room as my office and the other half as the laundry room that this closet should hold all the books that were scattered here and there around the house.  They all fit perfectly, with a bit of room  for a couple of decorations.

The closet was the biggest problem in the room.  I recently cleaned out the cabinets when I repainted them (see here). but there was some room for improvement.  My paint chips were multiplying and overflowing, as were my fabric  samples. See below.

I forgot to take a before of the fabric drawer, but just imagine a fabric store exploded and all the little bits of fabric landed in my drawer.  I didn’t do much editing for these two drawers (that kind of defeats the point of having the samples) but I did organize.  The paint chips got sorted and found a new home in the upper cabinets.  The fabric stayed and got sorted by size.

I keep all my cleaning products on a shelf above the washer and dryer.  I have cabinets just to the right of the washer and dryer for sorting dirty laundry, so I am lucky to have a place for everything and everything in it’s place.  All the laundry part of the room needed was a cleaning.  I added the curtain to hide everything when I am in office mode.

I can’t tell you how good it feels to finally organize this closet.  It has been on my To Do list for so long.  I can finally cross it off and move on.  I am going to link up with Traci over at Beneath My Heart for her Laundry Room Linky Party.  Come on over for a look.  I’m sure you will be as inspired as I have been.  Have a great weekend everyone!
